Outdoor cedar saunas are a rural London thing. Farm properties around Dorchester, Ilderton, Lucan and Ingersoll have the space, the privacy and often a woodpile, so a Serenity Sauna at $17,495 with a wood-burning heater is a natural fit and needs no electrical run to the far end of the yard. On a treed lot in Byron or a lakeshore property in Sarnia, the Serenity Mini at $14,995 tucks into a corner of the garden. Heaters are sold separately on both, the knotty cedar price is the one shown, and clear cedar is available if you prefer a cleaner grain.
Placement matters in this climate. An outdoor sauna wants a level base, a gravel apron so snowmelt runs away from the sill, and a door that does not face the prevailing westerly. Indoors, a Clearlight needs a dry room with a little clearance around the cabin, and because basements in the older neighbourhoods can be damp, a dehumidifier nearby is a sensible addition. Can I fit a Clearlight in an older London basement with a low ceiling?
Many pre-1970 houses in Old South, Old East and Byron have basements under seven feet, so ceiling height is the first thing to measure. Bring the number to the showroom and we will tell you which Sanctuary cabins clear it with room for the roof panel. Where a full cabin will not fit, a corner of the garage or a main floor spare room is the usual answer.
Where should a wood-burning Serenity go on a farm lot near Lucan or Dorchester?
Give it a level gravel or slab base away from the barn and any stored feed or fuel, with the chimney clear of overhanging branches. A spot within a short walk of the back door gets used on a January night, while one at the far end of the property does not. Check with your township about setbacks and any rules on wood-burning appliances before you build.
How does a sauna help with night shifts?
Warming up and then cooling down before bed helps a lot of people fall asleep, which is why so many hospital staff in London use an infrared cabin after a night shift. Twenty to thirty minutes at a moderate setting, then a cool shower or a few minutes in a Chill Tub, then bed. Put the cabin on a timer so it is warm when you walk in the door.
Is cedar the right choice for humid London summers?
Western red cedar handles humidity and temperature swings well, which is why it is the standard for outdoor saunas across Ontario. Leave the vents open between sessions so the interior dries out, and expect the exterior to silver over a few seasons unless you oil it. A gravel apron around the base keeps splash and leaf litter off the bottom boards.
Indoor or outdoor if I have a small Westmount or Byron lot?
On a mature lot the trees and the neighbours decide. A Serenity Mini fits most side or rear gardens and looks at home under a maple, but if the only spot is close to a fence line, check the setback with the city first.
